CAF World Giving Index : Could Payroll Giving shoot UK to the top?

Our wonderful friends at CAF have produced another excellent and insightful report on the world of fundraising, this time centred around how charitable we are on a global scale.

The CAF World Giving Index aggregates 10 years of data to explore the nature of giving around the world, asking: Have you done any of the following in the past month?

  • Helped a stranger, or someone you didn’t know who needed help?
  • Donated money to a charity?
  • Volunteered time to an organisation?

The UK have come off pretty well, coming in at the 7th most generous country overall and coming in at number 2 for donating money. It certainly makes us proud of this little island’s history of philanthropy and long may it continue!

We know that Payroll Giving can go a long way to helping us hold our spot and indeed escalate up the scale. CAF highlights in the report the need for governments to ‘make it easy for people to give and offer incentives for giving where possible.’

Payroll Giving makes giving to charity in the UK as easy and efficient as possible. The problem is, not enough of us are doing it. Only 24% of large employers offer the scheme. If Payroll Giving became mandatory for large employers then 50% more employees would have the chance to give through their pay and we could see the UK shooting to the top of the World Giving Index, not to mention raise millions more for charities.

The Geared for Giving Campaign are working across the sector to gain support for mandatory Payroll Giving – watch this space! We are also working with other countries to help them strengthen Payroll Giving globally, as the UK currently has one of the stronger schemes.
